Light Up
Redemption City

Light Up Redemption City is a strategic renewable energy fundraising initiative of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), aimed at expanding solar power infrastructure within Redemption City. The project builds on the successful first phase, which currently powers only the auditorium altar and selected offices through solar energy.

THE SOLARIZATION PROJECT

Background and Rationale

It is important to clarify that the entire new auditorium spans approximately 3 km by 3 km, but the existing solar installation currently powers only the altar area and selected offices.

The core objective of Light Up Redemption City is to deploy large-scale solar panels across the entire 3 km by 3 km auditorium roof area, as a major next phase.

Redemption City hosts large-scale religious, residential, administrative, and commercial activities that require sustainable and reliable power. The rising cost of energy and the Church’s commitment to stewardship, sustainability, and innovation make solar power a strategic investment.

Target & Capabilities

Technical Power Generation Plan
(Target State)

By deploying solar panels across the full 3 km × 3 km roof structure, the project is designed to become a utility-scale renewable energy asset, delivering clean, reliable, and sustainable electricity while drastically reducing long-term energy costs

Based on conservative engineering assumptions and available roof area:

Auditorium roof size:
3 km × 3 km (9,000,000 m²)

Average panel density:
~200 W/m²

Practical Peak Output (after losses):

≈ 1,300–1,400 MW

Estimated Installed Capacity (Peak):

≈ 1,800 MW (1.8 GW)

Average Continuous Power (20% capacity factor):

≈ 350–400 MW

Phased
Implementation
Roadmap

To ensure efficiency, accountability, and technical stability, the solar deployment will be executed in carefully planned phases.

This phased approach will ensure structured financial management, progressive infrastructure expansion, continuous performance evaluation, minimal disruption to ongoing activities, and transparent reporting and communication with stakeholders.

Each phase will represent measurable progress toward the overall vision of achieving large-scale clean energy generation across Redemption City.

PHASE 1

Foundation and Proof of Scale
(0–25%)

How We Lay the Foundation and Prove Our Capacity for Rapid Growth

Phase One of the Light Up Redemption City Initiative represents the moment where ambition becomes visible reality.

The journey starts by expanding beyond the currently powered altar and office areas to cover approximately 25% of the auditorium roof space. This phase is not only about installing more solar panels, it is about building confidence, proving technical capability, and creating the foundation for rapid future expansion.

This first phase is expected to deliver approximately:

  • 450 MW peak installed capacity
  • 90 MW average continuous power

Beyond the numbers, Phase One serves as a powerful demonstration project. It provides leadership, partners, and donors with tangible proof of progress and performance. The visibility of the installation across a significant portion of the auditorium roof symbolizes the beginning of a new energy future for Redemption City.

The focus during this stage will include:

  • Optimization of system performance
  • Technical validation and operational stability
  • Strategic integration with existing infrastructure
  • Building strong stakeholder and donor confidence through visible results

PHASE 2

Acceleration and Load Expansion
(25–50%)

Amplifying Solar Capacity, Expanding Energy Load

With the foundation established and the first milestones achieved, Phase Two marks the transition from proof of concept to accelerated expansion.

The solar deployment will extend to approximately 50% of the auditorium roof coverage, significantly increasing generation capacity and energy distribution capabilities across Redemption City.

At this stage, the project evolves from serving isolated facilities to supporting a broader ecosystem of activities within the City. Additional inverter systems, battery storage infrastructure, and grid-balancing technologies will be introduced to strengthen reliability and improve energy efficiency.

Expected output for this phase includes:

  • 900 MW peak installed capacity
  • 180 MW average continuous power

As the energy footprint expands, more facilities within Redemption City will begin benefiting from cleaner and more dependable electricity. Administrative operations, community facilities, and strategic infrastructure will increasingly rely on renewable power generated directly from the auditorium roof.

Phase Two is also a defining moment for stakeholder engagement. The measurable success of the first deployment phases reinforces trust among supporters and demonstrates disciplined project execution.

The focus of this stage includes:

  • Expansion of power delivery to additional facilities
  • Increased energy storage and balancing capabilities
  • Strengthening operational resilience
  • Reinforcing donor and stakeholder confidence through measurable progress
PHASE 3

Consolidation and City Impact
(50–75%)

Smart grid deployment and load balancing improvements

As the project enters Phase Three, the vision advances from large-scale generation to intelligent energy management.

With approximately 75% of the auditorium roof now covered, the initiative moves toward creating a sophisticated smart-grid ecosystem capable of managing energy generation, storage, and distribution with greater efficiency and stability.

This phase introduces advanced load balancing systems and optimized storage technologies designed to maximize the value of every unit of energy produced.

Expected output includes:

  • 1,350 MW peak installed capacity
  • 270 MW average continuous power

At this level, the impact of the project becomes unmistakably city-scale. Dependence on expensive alternative energy sources begins to decline significantly, creating long-term financial savings and improved operational sustainability.

More importantly, Redemption City starts emerging as a model for integrated renewable infrastructure — demonstrating how faith-based communities can lead innovation in sustainable development.

The focus during this phase includes:

  • Smart-grid deployment and intelligent energy distribution
  • Enhanced storage optimization and load balancing
  • Significant reduction in alternative energy costs
  • Demonstrable city-wide renewable energy impact
PHASE 4

Full Vision Realization
(75–100%)

Reduced reliance on national grid instability

Phase Four represents the full realization of the Light Up Redemption City vision.

For the first time, the entire 3 km × 3 km auditorium roof area will be fully covered and integrated into a unified renewable energy network. What began as a modest installation powering selected offices will have evolved into one of the most ambitious faith-driven renewable energy projects in the world.

This final stage is expected to achieve:

  • 1,800 MW peak installed capacity
  • 350–400 MW average continuous power

At full scale, the solar infrastructure becomes deeply integrated into the broader Redemption City power ecosystem, supporting long-term sustainability, operational resilience, and future expansion.

The project’s impact will extend far beyond energy generation. It will stand as a symbol of visionary leadership, environmental stewardship, and innovation-driven development.

Phase Four establishes Redemption City as:

  • A global reference point for faith-based renewable infrastructure
  • A model for sustainable urban-scale energy deployment
  • A leader in clean energy transformation within Africa and beyond
  • A long-term example of responsible stewardship and innovation
